Should I backup my course?

If you have ever asked this question, then the answer is YES!

There are 3 levels of backup that occur within the Learning Management System (LMS) environment:

  • System level – The purpose of this backup is for operating system, database, and application server data recovery from a system failure or other catastrophic event. The backup regime consists of daily differential backups and weekly full backup. The backup data is written to magnetic tape and managed by ITS-NS System Administrators.

  • Administrator level – The purpose of this backup is to provide an additional level of protection against data corruption at the course, section, or user levels. This backup is a weekly record of course content and user data. The backup data is stored using proprietary file compression and written to DVD by the ITS-ET Application Administrator..

  • Instructor level – The purpose of this backup is to serve as the most current and accurate backup file of your course information. This backup is the instructor or designers responsibility and should occur before and after any significant event (adding students, quizzing, grading, discussions, presentations) that effects your course. Instructors are limited to storing 3 backups per section on the server, but may convert backups to files and store them in their My Files, Course Files areas or download them for storage on their computer. Instructor level backups can only be restored by the server administrator. For directions to create instructor backups, click here.
